Dear Visitor,

Today, Scottish Family Heritage launched a trial version of its databases and, it is hoped these will be of some interest to genealogists and students of local history alike. At present they contain only a very small number of entries, however, it is hoped to increase these substantially in the not too distant future.

Please feel free to email us your opinions about any aspect of our databases. We will be glad to hear from you.

Dear Visitor,

Today Scottish Family Heritage launched its free list of the shires or counties of Scotland, together with the parishes contained in each shire. This list has been compiled from information detailed in

The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland
edited by the Rev. John Marius Wilson
published in London and Edinburgh c.1868.

It is important to be aware that since the 19th century the boundaries of many shires and parishes have altered considerably. Several shires had dual names such as Edinburghshire which was also known by its present day name of Midlothian, or the northern county of Elginshire known also as Morayshire.

Following the way in which many names were recorded by inconsistent spellings prior to the 20th century, a number of parish names often had more than one way of being written. Further, the spelling of some parish names now differs from the way they were written previously.

Dear Visitor,

Our first trial Personal Document Index (PDI) lists came on line of Tuesday 17th of October, 2000. These are mainly an A-Z catalogue showing the assorted documents, made for, or by, the people or other bodies listed in our  our private archive of assorted historical documents. The lists are free, but unfortunately various charges are necessary should you wish to consult or have copies of the original documents.

Currently, the number of entries is small, however, it is hoped to significantly enlarge them, if there is sufficient interest.  So keep on trying if at first you do not find what you are looking for. It might be there the next time!
